We are Shepherd Leaders!

In our first training, we read through the following Scriptures, looking at characteristics of  shepherds and our Great Shepherd Jesus!  God has called and placed shepherds like us to watch over, care for, guide, feed and protect His flock.

Our theme Passage!
Psalm 78:70-72 NIV
70 He chose David his servant and took him from the sheep pens; 71 from tending the sheep he brought him to be the shepherd of his people Jacob, of Israel his inheritance.  72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; with skillful hands he led them.

Eze 34:1-24
Please re-read this passage.
John 10:11-15 NIV
11“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. 13 The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep. 14  “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep.
Hebrews 13:20-21 NIV
May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,  21 equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Acts 20:28 NIV
Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.
1 Peter 5:2 NIV
Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve;

  2. What Core Value would you like to exemplify more in and through your life?
The Shepherd’s Character
What are Biblical qualities of a Shepherd Leader?
Identify 3 of the top qualities you feel a shepherd leader needs in order to Biblically care for and guide their flock.  Write each of the qualities on a separate post it note.

Discussion:  What’s the difference between a Servant Leader and a Shepherd Leader.
If they are not positional, there attitudes and attributes common to both types of leaders.  Shepherd Leaders have a weightier call.  Biblically as elders, overseers, pastors - shepherd leaders have a Biblical criteria.

Scripture References this Morning
 1. Jeremiah 23:1-5 :  There is a seriousness to our call as shepherd leaders.
  1. Titus 1-2.
One distinctive mark of a Biblical Shepherd.  Teacher of Sound Doctrine.
Theology Matters.

Titus 1:1    Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ for the faith of God’s elect and the knowledge of the truth that leads to godliness—  2 a faith and knowledge resting on the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time,  3 and at his appointed season he brought his word to light through the preaching entrusted to me by the command of God our Savior,
Titus 1:9 He must hold firmly to the trustworthy message as it has been taught, so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.
Titus 1:10     For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group.  11 They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach—and that for the sake of dishonest gain.
13 This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith 14 and will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands of those who reject the truth.
Titus 2:1    You must teach what is in accord with sound doctrine.
3. Psalm 23:1-3
